44th Anniversary: ’68 Tet Offensive

by Frank Stoddard

Part of the many Saigon Kids experience is the “war”.

Today (1/31/2012) is the 44th anniversary of the ’68 Tet offensive.

I remember it like it was yesterday. Time has really traveled fast.

I was in Hue/Phu Bia at the time.

All those guys that died back then, really missed out! As some of them used to say “Life is nothing but a party”!!

People’s survivable skills are amazing sometimes! Whatever happens we drive on!

Sorry, I do realize my thoughts sound disjointed at the moment.

Cheers!

I was home on leave with orders to Vietnam in my pocket. Word of the Tet offensive came on the TV and needless to say, my mom was just so upset. I arrived in Vietnam just a few days later and the first night in country, the VC blew up the ammo dump near the reception center at Long Binh. As a support trooper (commo), I was assigned to a helicopter HQ at Long Binh and while we got shelled or rocketed a few times, the year was pretty much uneventful, thank goodness. Was home in January 1969.
