Did it refresh your memories?

Was it “really necessary”?

Should we have come in the first place?

Was it really “a waste”?

Was that really all she could think of to say?

Were you present for this filming?

If so, tell us about it in the Comments below.

The timeline seems off here. I left in June of 1964 (dad was transferred) and at that time I had heard no talk of sending dependents away. My friends remained in Saigon for around six months after I left. This could be from a later date, maybe in the Fall of ’64…

    • Les – The news agency who filmed these *Time Stamped* them as being filmed in Saigon on May 12, 1964. I’m sure the news crew (reporters, camera crew, etc.) knew what date the filming was done on and had there camera *date and time stamps* set for the correct date of the filming.

I believe the time is reasonably correct. Karen and I left Saigon in August 1964, so the interview could not have occurred after August. My mother, who was principal of the high school, was also interviewed by CBS. I do know that her interview was televised, not sure about Karen’s.

Karen was headed back to college and I was leaving to ensure that my senior year was not interrupted. My parents believed there was a good chance that they would be evacuated in later 1964 or 1965. As it turned out, my parents and three younger sisters, Ellen, Susan, and Barbara, left in March 1965.

    • Larry – Thank you for the information. These film clips are from achieves of films that were never televised. Hence, I doubt this clip of Karen was ever televised.

I haven’t been able to open find this video and I so remember Karen Lindquist; I think we were in the same grade.

    • Laurie – If you click the revolving circle/arrow in the center of the video it should start playing. If it will not play for you then the problem is with your computer and/or Internet connection. The video is formatted to play on Desk Top and Lap Top computers, as well as, all mobile devices including cell phones.

My brother and I attended the American Community School throughout the Fall of 1964. I believe it was the American Embassy terrorist attack in Saigon that precipitated the evacuation of dependents. That happened March 30, 1965. By that time, I was attending the school for children of missionaries in Dalat, VN; our entire school was evacuated on four C-123s on Easter Sunday afternoon–in April 1965–to Bangkok. Later the school was relocated to Tanah Rata, Malaysia and eventually to Penang, Malaysia, where it remains to this day!

That captured a unique moment in time and brought back memories. Thanks for sharing.

My brother let me know about this video. Yes, it was May. I cannot remember why I was asked. I do remember not being impressed with the reported! Larry and I arrived in Bangkok on our way back to the States the Day of the Gulf of Tonkin incident. And all of a “sudden” we were at war. After the Tet offensive, the decision was made for Americans to be evacuated. Mom and the family stayed on as she had to try to get records together to be sent on to parents. I know she regretted she could not get them all out before she had to go. Dad had shut down his project in early March. As a side note, I could not find them nor did I hear from them from the Tet offensive until Bernie Fall found out where they were – Athens!

    • Hello Karen! Welcome to our Saigon Kids family. We’re glad you found us and joined the group. Thank you or sharing your memories! Please visit often and share more memories.
