OBITUARIES: PETE CHESTON PASSED AWAY

ObituariesCornelia “Key” Morrow Cheston, 72, and Major Elliott Burwell “Pete” Cheston Jr., USA (Ret), 71, passed away on May 3, 2015, in Union Bridge, Maryland.

Childhood sweethearts who reconnected later in life, Key and Pete were married on November 29, 1991. Together they built a life following their passions and became very active within their community supporting local churches, school programs and public safety programs.

They were members of the St. Andrew’s Society of Mid-Maryland, the Clan Buchanan, and the Clan Murray, among others.

Cornelia was a very hardworking and committed person throughout her life.

She turned her love for dogs into a successful Woman-owned Business Enterprise (WBE), Search Dogs Inc. (SDI). Established in 1999, SDI provided drug and bomb detection services using specially trained detector canines.

Working in connection with U.S. Military and civilian law enforcement agencies, SDI made it their mission to create a safe and secure environment wherever their services were provided, in some cases protecting thousands.

Key was also a member of the Frederick Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Elliott Burwell was a decorated U.S. Army veteran who volunteered for back-to-back tours in Vietnam as a Special Forces (“Green Beret”) Team Leader before transitioning to civilian general contract construction program management on projects in the U.S. and overseas.

He was a certified Special Conservator of the Peace, which he employed in support of SDI operations, serving alongside their beloved K-9s. Pete was also a member of the U.S. Special Forces Association.

Cornelia Cheston is survived by her daughters, Tish Pollock of Yamhill, OR, Melissa Young of Keizer, OR, and Cornelia Hockman of Shepherdstown, WV; granddaughters, Alexandra Hockman of Chattanooga, TN, and Caroline Young of Keizer, OR; grandson, Christian Hockman of Shepherdstown, WV; and sister, Caroline Creekmur of Fort Lauderdale, FL. Cornelia was preceded in death by her mother, Eleanor Morrow Larson; father, Montgomery Morrow; stepfather, Commander Vernon H. Larson, USN (Ret); and sister, Eleanor Morrow Geoghegan.

She is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews and cousins.

Major Elliott Cheston, USA (Ret), is survived by his son, Jonathan Cheston of Columbia, SC; his brothers, Lieutenant Colonel Randy Cheston, USMC (Ret) of Memphis, TN, and Colonel Mike Cheston, USMCR (Ret) of Alexandria, VA; and sister, Sandy Doyle of Japan.

He was preceded in death by his father, Colonel Elliott Burwell Cheston, USA (Ret); and mother, Ann Cary Cheston.

He is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family is requesting in lieu of flowers, to make donations in their names to Save-a-vet.org, dedicated to finding adoption for military and law enforcement service dogs.
