Sorry to miss the joint reads of our two works. I was a bit distracted at the end of the reunion and trying to get as much information out of my brother and others as possible. I looked it up and it would have been interesting,….
“James Dean in Saigon: Counterculture Imperialism,” was an allusion to his teen-age attempt to be a good “cultural ambassador”–in the words of the Cold War-era manual his family read before leaving the United States–by introducing Saigon kids to U.S. pop-culture highlights of the era.
Perhaps another time. Great to meet you and keep up the prolific work. When I get done with the book, I’ll get in touch. Thanks. Sandy
Hello Sandy,
Good to meet you. Like you, I wanted to hear as many Saigon stories as I could while I was in Phoenix. There were several people, you among them, with whom I would have liked to spend more time talking about their experiences. I look forward to reading your book. In addition to James Dean in Saigon there is a short video, The Poetic Geography of Saigon, on this website that I posted a few years ago.
Please keep in touch. I’m at turner@chapman.edu and turnerprojects.com.
Best,
Richard
