Finally! I tried several years ago to make contact with you, and now you are officially with us!
I have such great memories of our time together in Saigon, and some old pictures, too.
Would you believe that I kept your old tennis shoes hanging in my bedroom for months after you sailed away? What a “fan”, eh? You probably don’t recall giving them to me on the ship when we were all there to say bon voyage to you.
Lucky you, moving to Hawaii. Would love to hear from you when time permits to catch up on 50 years of life since Saigon.
I am well, living in Houston with my husband of 44 years, 3 kids and 3 grandchildren, too. Still teaching school.
Best of luck with the move.
Hope to hear from you, John.

My brother, Mike Trued, was friends with you when we were in Saigon 1958-1960!!! I was just the little sister. But I remember you. Mike lives and works in DC now—I am in NYC. Mike’s email is micheal.trued[@]exim.gov if you want to email him.

    Dear Bob,
    Tennis shoe info:
Sadly, John’s tennis shoes were apparently given the “heave-ho” after I was hurridly packed to leave Saigon due to my grandfather’s illness stateside. For many months prior to our departure, “Tricker”‘s (my Dad’s affectionate nickname for John Treat)shoes hung by their laces tied to the burglar bars inside my bedroom window. Surprisingly? they were not in my collecton of Saigon memorabilia when it reached Charleston, S.C., our next duty station. Perhaps the cook or houseboy gave them another life!

Well, who knew? Do these old, trashed shoes actually sell? That was educational, but “scarrrrrr-wy!” Do you suppose these are college kids trying to raise a buck for a burger or beer?
Whatever, John’s shoes might have helped me finance some teen-year’s fun had I but known of the financial possibilities way back then.
Dang it! Missed the boat, again!

Hope you are well and having a busy but relaxing summer. We are up to our ears in elderly parents and a sister-in-law who are all suffering from dementia and now requiring 24/7care in communities nearby. A new phase of our lives, but we are well so far and treading to keep our heads above water.
Charles and I have decided to help our children by putting our heads in the oven when that time comes. Being elderly is not fun for the elderly nor their devoted kids.

Hoping for rain from Don, but so far not a drop of water except for the massive leak that occurred in our attic while we were on vacation and flooded 3 bedrooms, upstairs and master baths. Lots of water…just not where we needed it in the yard. C’est la vie.

Always enjoy Fridays and your email. Thank you for all you do to keep us connected, Bob. You Rock! But then you always did 🙂

    • S’ellen – YES! Old trashed shoes actually sell on eBay – as unbelievable as it may seem – LOL.

I first heard about this around 2001/2002 time frame when a gal that lived down the road a piece mentioned at a social gathering she was selling old trashed tennis shoes on eBay for 100s of dollars in many cases. She got my attention because at the time I was a Power Seller on eBay (not to mention she was very, very easy on the eyes – lol), so anything to do with eBay I was always interested in hearing about. At the time she was one of only about 5 or 6 people selling old trashed shoes on eBay. Anyway, I got to chatting with her about how she was selling dirty old trashed shoes on eBay so successfully. It turns out it all started by accident. She had cleaned out the attic, garage and basement of stuff that was just sitting around collecting dust. Like most folks, she decided to hold a yard sale to get rid of it all. She got rid of a good deal of the stuff during her yard sale – but still had about 2/3 of it that didn’t sell. The city would only permit 2 yard sales a year per household. So she thought – let’s try eBay the largest garage sale on the planet. So she started listing all this stuff on eBay. In the process she noticed that items which were basically just junk having little if any value – would sell quickly if she wrote a little story about them in the eBay listing … why she got it, when she got it, how she had used, etc. etc. Then when she got to a bunch of dirty old trashed tennis shoes in the pile of stuff … she thought *what the heck* why not write a story about a pair of shoe’s *life*. So she did just for the fun of it – lol. She’d write about why she bought them in the first place, for what occasion/use, every place she had worn them, and all kinds of interesting little things about *the life* of each pair of shoes. She then listed them on eBay a long with a picture of her wearing them (picture was from her knees down only). To her surprise the dang things were selling in bidding wars – lol. She discovered that the more details she included about each pair of shoes *life* the more they sold for – one pair (after a wild bidding war) sold for a little over $1,000. Then people who lost in the bidding wars started to email her asking to be notified when she listed more shoes – lol. Well, she ran out of old worn dirty trashed shoes – but, was telling some of her girl friends about it. One of her girl friends had some old shoes she wanted to get rid of, but didn’t know how to list them on eBay, so she listed them for her – writing a story about … My girl friend Susie got these shoes for blah blah blah … Well, they sold like ice cold water melons on a hot summer day. Several of her other girl friends started giving her their old shoes along with the stories of the shoe’s *life*. It seemed the more well traveled and stranger places the shoes had been worn the more they sold for on eBay – lol. Soon word spread to some members of her church. The church was having a little fund raiser to help a needy family in the community and one of the church ladies asked her if she would be willing to help out, if folks would donate dirty old shoes for her to sell on eBay. She accepted with 25% of the profits going to the fund raiser project – she got the remainder for doing all the work to sell the shoes and cover the eBay auction expenses, etc. A long story short – she continued to help raise funds for community charity projects over the next 4 to 5 years by selling dirty old worn shoes on eBay. Over the 5 years she raised over $50K for charity projects and made just under $100K herself (which she used to pay off the mortgage on their house).

I always found her creative writing talents to be fantastic. Sometimes I’d view her listings on eBay just to get a laugh from her *Life Stories of Shoes* – LOL – 🙂 I suggested several times she compile all the life stories of the shoes into a book – lol – but, she never did.

Over the years, having been an eBay Power Seller 5 or 6 times, I’ve always said, “you can sell anything on eBay!” (as long as, it doesn’t violate there Terms of Use).

      Rock Onnn … 🙂
