Adventures In Psyops from the author of Forrest Gump is a great article. I could connect to many things he said. The long rain of early 1967 is one that comes to mind.
One day, as we were walking down a dirt road, I Psyops plane circled overhead and was playing “Snoopy vs. the Red Baron” for our listening pleasure. I think Americans are pretty good at putting humor into bad things.. I think that is why I liked “Forrest Gump” so much.
I think most folks know that of all the cartoon charters, Snoopy was the symbol for the Vietnam war.
On my Zippo lighter I had … on one side was written Cpl. C.F. Stoddard, 2222588 (I was lucky with this service number, because one of my disabilities is remembering numbers..lol), USMC and a map of South Vietnam. On the other side was an engraving of Snoopy on top of his dog house. He had the “thought symbol” above his head and in it were the words, “F— It”! (My own thoughts back in 1967-68)
I accidentally left that lighter on the roulette table at the Flamingo Casino in 1969.
I wish I had it today to give to one of my kids.
