SLOW DANCING IN SAIGON: WHO IS PICTURED?

Hello Fellow ACS Classmates,

We recently put together a book of photographs of Saigon parties held during the late 50s and early 60s entitled Slow Dancing in Saigon. (The accompanying PDF includes the cover and the first 19 pages.) While sharing the work-in-progress with friends, the consistent feedback that we received was “Who are the people in these photographs and what happened at these parties?”

Realizing that we needed to address issue, we thought that we would reach out to those of you who actually attended these parties to ask you if you would be willing to take a moment to share your memories of those days. If this project interests you would you please send us a brief recollection of a specific event that happened to you at one of the Saigon parties, comments about your fellow party-goers, and/or an observation about what these parties meant to you personally. Any length, from a couple of sentences to a few paragraphs will do.

We are currently working on reformatting Slow Dancing in Saigon in a smaller size, editing down the number of images and having them printed with greater definition. Your recollections will make the book more interesting to those of us who lived in Saigon as teenagers and more accessible to the general reader. Your comments will appear anonymously in the body of the book but all contributors will be acknowledged in the credits at the end of the book.

Please send any written contributions to turner [@]chapman.edu with a cc to folk1[@]mindspring.com.

We look forward to hearing from you,

Richard and John Turner

  • Dear Richard and John,

What great idea! These photos are a treasured sampling of the many nights we teenagers spent dancing the night away in Saigon. I can identify some of us. Do you still need names?
Are you interested in having any more added to the collection? I have some I would be happy to share, if you would like them.
    Mine are from 1958-60.
Let me know and I’ll try to figure out how to get them to you. Not too techie here, but I’ll give it a go if you are interested.
    My best always,
    Suellen

I have a fairly large collection of photos of my Saigon time (61-64) and I would be happy to send then to you via a CD if you would be kind enough to give me an email address. For this purpose, please us to provide the address and not my personal email. I provided the same to Bob a few years ago along with an index of who is who as best I could recall. Let me know and I live the idea of the project. Ken in Germany

  • My mother held dances once a month at our house on Doan Thi Diem. She originally hired a Vietnamese dance instructor but he wasn’t attuned to the music or dances American kids were passionate about. My brother, Tom, was in charge of the music, something he’d brought with him from the states. Do any of you remember attending these parties?

    Sandy,

Thanks for your comment. Were the dance parties for you or for your mom and her friends? What kinds of dances did the Vietnamese instructor try to teach?
